Hot Cocoa Bar & Coffee Bar

diy hot cocoa bar

It’s the most wonderful time of year and that means lots of hot cocoa (or hot chocolate)!  Since my teens really love hot cocoa I turned our coffee bar into a hot cocoa & coffee bar. We have the best of both worlds now. Hot chocolate bars are really easy to put together and you really do not need anything fancy.

Let’s start off with talking about cups. You will need some cups, whether they are mugs or paper cups.  Any cups will do really, but really cute festive cups will really bring your hot cocoa bar to the next level.  I’m using Rae Dunn festive mugs that I purchased from Home Goods and they had a couple different sets. If you aren’t able to find any at your local stores then they have a couple different sets on Amazon: Peace & Joy, Merry & Christmas. Or you can just go with a cute festive set. If paper cups are more your style then no worries, they have many cute and festive designs.  The snowflake cups used in my hot cocoa & coffee bar came from Hobby Lobby but I found some really cute buffalo plaid cups that read Merry Christmas.

Next you are going to need hot chocolate mix. You can go with a homemade recipe or you can go with a premade mix. You can find most premade mixes in individual packets or large containers.  Whichever way you decide to go with, the hot cocoa mix looks great stored in a large mason jar or container.

We love our Keurig Coffee Maker, it is so handy and our style even has a milk frother.

Now let’s talk about the toppings because this is what makes your hot cocoa from special to over the top! You have so many choices when it comes to toppings. Pick a few of your favorites and put them out in small jars. You can find many containers at the dollar tree and then label them with chalkboard labels with which topping it is. Below I have listed many great topping ideas.

Hot Chocolate Toppings

  • marshmallows
  • candy canes
  • Pirouette cookies
  • whipped cream
  • mini chocolate chips
  • sprinkles
  • coarse sea salt
  • crushed peppermints
  • soft peppermint sticks
  • dark chocolate syrup
  • toffee bits
  • caramel sauce
  • cinnamon
  • white chocolate chips
  • Bailey’s or Kahlua (Adult’s Only)

Hot Cocoa Bar Sign

Every hot cocoa bar needs a great sign and the one I used can be found here in my Etsy shop. You can print the sign off in an 8×10, 11×14 or 16×20 size and then frame it. If you don’t have a hot cocoa bar sign then you can use any Winter or Christmas themed sign.

Also, think about putting out small signs or other decor that match your theme or color scheme. I think small Christmas trees like in my hot cocoa bar make it so much more festive. A cute pom pom banner or garland would like very nice as well. If you have festive flower picks, you can add those in the little nooks as an easy decorative touch.
